Highlights
- Lăng Cô bay from the road above the Hải Vân tunnel
- Khải Định tomb, its interior inlaid with porcelain
- The Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City
- Thiên Mụ Pagoda on the Perfume River
Hue is only 100km from Da Nang but it is a different world: slower, quieter, and a few hundred years older. A day is enough to touch the three things that matter most — the palace, a royal tomb, and a pagoda on the river.
It is a long day; the coach covers close to five hours in total. But if you are based in Da Nang for a few nights and do not want to move hotels, this is the sensible way to see the old capital.
Heritage tickets are more than half the tour price
Entry to the Imperial City is 200,000₫ and Khải Định tomb is 150,000₫ — those two alone account for 350,000₫ of the 690,000₫ price. The rest covers the coach, the guide, lunch and insurance. Worth knowing when you compare against going independently.
Practical notes
Bring motion sickness tablets. Even with the Hải Vân tunnel the road still has plenty of bends, and this is the longest of the Da Nang day tours.
Cover up at Thiên Mụ Pagoda. Sleeves, and trousers or a skirt below the knee. The Imperial City is more relaxed.
The Imperial City is vast and almost entirely unshaded. In summer bring a hat, water and a hand fan — plenty of visitors run out of energy halfway through the afternoon.
Go early if you want good photographs of Khải Định. Thiên Định palace is dark and tight inside, and at midday with tour groups in it there is barely room to move.
Try real bún bò Huế at lunch. It is stronger and hotter than the version sold in Da Nang — tell the guide in advance if your group includes children who cannot take chilli.
For a slower trip, consider the heritage train. The Đà Nẵng–Huế line runs along the Hải Vân pass and is the most scenic stretch of railway in Vietnam, but it costs more time and money.
